Founded by Els Hooft in 1991, Baobab Batik has created a nurturing work environment where the women of Baobab can learn, grow, and refine their skills. At the heart of our culture is the belief in TEAM – Together Everyone Achieves More – a transparent and encouraging spirit that continues to be the key to our success.
Our vision is to be a leading example in Eswatini and beyond of a social enterprise that uses thoughtful leadership and innovation to empower women and develop the batik art form.
The batik process consists of three main stages: waxing, dyeing, and sewing. It begins in the waxing room, where skilled artisans trace the desired patterns onto the fabric and fill them in with wax. The fabric is then sent to the colour house where it is carefully dyed according to the design specifications.
If the design calls for multiple layers of colour, the fabric is returned to the waxing room—once dried—for the next layer of wax to be applied. This cycle continues until all layers are complete. Once finished, the fabric is soaked in hot water to melt away the wax, revealing the intricate and distinctive batik patterns.
The final step takes place in the sewing room, where the dyed fabrics are crafted into the beautiful range of products we proudly offer.
