The Baule passport masks were traditionally carried by the Dan people and kept in leather pouches. These miniature replicas of family masks once served as a form of identification. They were also proudly displayed to honor distinguished visitors to the village. Most masks were intricately carved to resemble a specific family member or a person of high regard.
